Engineering students and faculty are invited to attend and participate in the Women in Construction Research Symposium and PPE Hackathon taking place on Monday and Tuesday, April 14-15.
Full-day attendance is not necessary or expected —we are happy to have participants come and go throughout the day. However, we will request that anyone attending a presentation at the symposium stay for the duration of the session.
About the Events:
The annual Verifying Everyone’s Safety Together Hackathon deconstructs and redesigns safety equipment, with students crafting solutions with industry members to better fit the wearer. This year, we will analyze the fit of safety harnesses and personal fall arrest systems. Students will have the opportunity to try on a harness and experience being suspended from it, enabling them to work alongside industry experts to improve the fit.(Location: Bldg. 21, Room 105, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and April 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
The Women in Construction Research Symposium will dig into critical research, issues and trends impacting women in the construction, architecture and engineering fields. Industry panelists will discuss ways to navigate career pathways, find mentors and leverage relationships, while students will also present their research. We also invite students to share internship experiences so we can improve internship opportunities. (Location: Chumash Auditorium in the UU, April 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. , and April 15 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.)
This interdisciplinary event will include workshops and panels. Although the focus is on the construction industry, there are many connections to mechanical, civil, software, electrical and general engineering disciplines. For instance, these fields are often male-dominated, making it essential to discuss topics such as building professional networks, finding mentors and developing resilience. Students from CSSE will be presenting on data security and privacy, and we’ll be evaluating the use and integration of wearable technologies into safety equipment.
To Register:
Students are free to attend any of the sessions, but we ask that they fill out the form here so we can plan accordingly.
All hackathon attendees will receive a digital badge.
