Please join us for an exciting colloquium on Thursday, May 7 in 53-215 with Cal Poly alumnus Kian Orang, BSEE on “Schilling Robotics – Leader in Subsea Technology.”

Schilling Robotics is an underwater robotics company specializing in manipulators an remotely operated vehicles designed for harsh environments. Founded in 1985, the company has been a leader in the subsea robotic arms market, having delivered over 3,000 manipulator systems.

Kian Orang is an associate electrical engineer at Schilling Robotics who studied electrical engineering at Cal Poly, graduating with his BSEE in 2023. He started at Schilling Robotics as an electrical engineering intern, where he was provided the opportunity to design PCBs and conduct experiments on SST subsystems. Currently, he is working on the motor controllers for an electrically powered ROV. Some challenges of this project include protecting low-voltage circuity from noise generated by high-frequency switching power supplied, minimizing heat generation caused by loads up to 100 A, and maintaining functionality within harsh environmental conditions including shock and vibration, extreme heat and cold, and hydraulic pressure. Kian was a member of the Cal Poly Power and Energy Society and looks back fondly at the extended lab and project time spent in his classes. In his free time, Kian enjoys long-distance running, camping and playing ultimate frisbee.

In addition to his presentation, Kian will be available to meet with interested students to chat about his experiences in industry from 1:10-2 p.m. in the 6th floor lobby of Baker Science (bldg. 180).
