The Mechanical Engineering Department operates two machine shops that support students, faculty and staff across the university. The Mustang ’60 (Building 197) and Aero Hangar (Building 4) shops are staffed by student safety technicians who ensure safe usage of the shops and provide training on using the equipment. We want to make sure you all know about this resource. To learn more about the shops, click here.
To access the shops, all first-time users (including faculty and staff) must first complete a three-hour safety tour and test. Successful completion grants a “Red Tag,” giving the holder shop access and use of the hand tools, woodshop, basic metal working equipment and laser cutters. Additional training is available for the other shop equipment. While faculty and staff are welcome to join any Red Tag training, during finals week this fall, the Aero Hangar Shop is planning two special trainings for faculty and staff only:
- Monday, Dec. 9, 1 to 4 p.m.
- Thursday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (more openings here)
If you are interested in accessing the machine shops, I encourage you to participate in one of these special sessions! To sign up, please complete this form:

After you sign up, visit https://machineshops.calpoly.edu/red-tags/, enroll in the Red Tag Canvas Course, then complete the course before attending your training session. The Canvas Course takes about 45 minutes to complete. We’ll email you to confirm the time of your training next week.
Special thanks to our Shop Managers, Mike Hillman and Eric Pulse, for arranging these sessions!
