Through Cal Poly’s Noyce School of Applied Computing, a group of students will now have the opportunity to practically apply their computing curriculum in Barcelona, Spain.

The brand-new Cal Poly Global Program: Computational Sciences in Barcelona will give second- and third-year computing students an immersive experience in Spain as they work toward completing their required classes.

“I’m hoping for more curiosity from the students and that they get a taste of another culture,” shared computer science and software engineering Assistant Professor Theresa Migler, who will be leading the program along with lecturer Andrew Migler.

This unique experience will run during spring quarter from April 2 to June 14, 2025. The coursework includes required classes for computing students, including CSC 349 Design and Analysis of Algorithms, CSC 365 Introduction to Database Systems and CSC 490 Selected Advanced Topics.

Through the program, students will learn practical computing applications, like how to create and manage databases to support the investigation and analysis of Spanish networks.

“In the 490 class, which I’m calling ‘Networks through Time and Spain,’ we’ll study plague transmission networks, the Roman Road network, the modern rail network and language diffusion,” Theresa explained. “We have trips planned that support the course topics, and we’ll really be living what we are studying.”

Day excursions will include visits to Montserrat, Girona and Tossa de Mar.

Those interested in the program can complete an application online through Dec. 15.

There will also be an information session about the program on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m.

All students who apply to the program will automatically be considered for a Noyce School of Applied Computing Scholarship to help with the cost of the program. Up to seven scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded to students.
