Apply to Participate in Athlete Research Study

Undergraduate biomedical engineering student Emma Schafer is looking for at birth female athletes (i.e. basketball, soccer, volleyball and track & field) to participate in her research project. You must not have had any previous ligamentous injuries in the lower extremities to participate.

The study will take place on your own and at the Cal Poly recreation center racquetball courts. This study will provide clues about training effects on neuromuscular coordination in hopes to create a training regime that will reduce injury risk, correct muscle imbalances and maximize training efficiency. Your participation will provide the opportunity to finally put injury prevention and rehabilitation back into your hands!

This study requires an hour of individual work a week and a two-hour session once a month for six months. In the hour of individual work, you will be expected to complete fifteen minutes of exercises for a total of four days. During the two-hour sessions, you are expected to complete a series of tests and forms for us to collect data. The goal of this supplemental workout is to decrease biomechanical attributes that have been known to cause ACL injuries. Please contact Emma Schafer at enschafe@calpoly.edu or Dr. Michael Whitt at 805-756-6433 if you’re interested and/or have any questions. In addition, if you are reading this and know athletes who fit the following criteria, please pass along this information.
