Cal Poly is partnering with other CSU campuses, the CSU Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) and select University of California campuses to offer the CSU PRE-Professor Program (PREPP).

This program helps doctoral students learn what it is like to be a faculty member at a comprehensive CSU like ours. We are seeking applications from faculty across our campus to serve as CSU PREPP Faculty Mentors. We hope you will review the attached materials and see if joining the program as a mentor fits with your expertise, interest and time. If so, we encourage you to apply. We will need one mentor for 2024-25 but may expand the program in future years.

PREPP Program:

The program is a quarter-long experience for CDIP and select UC doctoral students to participate as CSU PREPP Fellows, where they are paired with a CSU Faculty Mentor. Fellows will receive individual mentorship from an experienced CSU Faculty Mentor in two broad categories: Instruction and Understanding the Campus Culture and Service.

This program aligns well with our campus goals to recruit highly qualified candidates (especially those from underrepresented backgrounds) for our faculty positions by helping Fellows understand what it means to work at a CSU.

Mentor Qualifications:

This call is open to all tenured faculty across the campus. Faculty mentors need to have a strong record of accomplishments in instruction; strong interpersonal skills; and broad knowledge of department, college and university level infrastructure.

Timeline and Expectations:

·        Spring 2024: Selection of Mentors.

·        Fall 2024: Selection of Fellows.

·        Winter 2025 and Spring 2025: CSU PREPP Mentor will work alongside our Cal Poly CSU PREPP Liaison, Dr. Julie Bettergarcia and the other CSU campus faculty mentors to learn about the program and its activities. Mentor will work with up to three CSU PREPP Fellows.

The majority of the PREPP Mentor and Fellow work will take place online, but the Fellow will also receive funding for a campus visit. The Mentor will be expected to make the connections for the individual Fellows to appropriate faculty for teaching experiences, research/lab meetings, shared governance bodies, department chairs, etc. Note that the Fellows will likely be in fields other than the selected PREPP Mentor’s.

Compensation:

The selected mentor will receive a total of 8 WTUs for AY 2024-2025 to complete fellow mentorship (winter 25 and spring 25).  Course releases must be used in AY 24-25.

Application Components:
