Dr. Nazli Yesiller (Director, Global Waste Research Institute) and Professor Jim Hanson (Civil and Environmental Engineering) recently attended the ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) Committee Week held in Denver for combined meetings of Committee D18 – Soil and Rock and Committee D35 – Geosynthetics. ASTM is celebrating the Society’s 125th anniversary this year.

Both Yesiller and Hanson are highly involved with ASTM. Dr. Yesiller serves as vice chair of Committee D18. Dr. Yesiller is also the Co-Editor-in-Chief of ASTM Geotechnical Testing Journal. She recently received the Award of Merit from ASTM, to recognize her for distinguished service to the cause of voluntary standardization and in turn received the honorary title of Fellow. The Award of Merit is the highest society award granted to an individual ASTM member.

Dr. Hanson serves as the chair of ASTM Subcommittee D18.14 – Geotechnics of Sustainable Construction. Dr. Hanson recently received the Richard S. Ladd Standards Development Award for being the primary author of ASTM D2434 Standard Test Methods for Measurement of Hydraulic Conductivity of Coarse-Grained Soils. This standard was last revised in 1968 (for context, the oldest needing revision of all the soil and rock standards) and was entirely redefined by Hanson and the working task group.

Both Yesiller and Hanson enjoy taking part in the consensus standardization process as well as the productive and fun collegiality of the membership.
