Cal Poly Admissions has received a grant from the CSU and we will be hosting the Summer Algebra Institute (SAI) for 7th, 8th and 9th-grade students in partnership with Allan Hancock College (AHC) and Cal-SOAP. This 5-week program seeks to promote math and college readiness among underrepresented students with a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics). The SAI will serve local students in the Santa Maria and Lompoc regions and the math program will be hosted at the AHC Lompoc Valley Center and Santa Maria campus sites.
The program will allow participating students to travel to Cal Poly’s campus for bi-weekly field trips to experience Learn by Doing interactive workshops, campus and college tours, admission and financial aid sessions, and student life. In addition to daily math instruction, students will participate in STEAM-focused activities for a minimum of 2 hours per week.
We are seeking facilitators (graduate students and/or professors) that are willing to host at least one Learn by Doing activity/workshop, STEAM-related career exploration, or other activities that reinforce the real-life application of mathematics. These sessions would be at minimum 1-2 hours in length and occur during at least one of the Cal Poly campus field trips. Multiple day and/or “take-home” activities are also an option.
The SAI program start date is June 13th and will end on July 15. Additional information about the program can be found in the SAI application packet.
