College of Engineering Q2S Open Conversation

The College of Engineering will be hosting several open conversations for faculty, staff, and students.  The goal of these conversations is think creatively and broadly about how the college will transition from quarters to semesters (Q2S).  The impact of Q2S on the college and departments will happen at many levels, but the departments will ultimately implement the changes to the curriculum.  These conversations are meant to be a place where folks can brainstorm ideas.

The CENG Dean’s Office and Curriculum Committee are co-hosting these events.  We will foster conversation, gather input and ideas, synthesize the discussions, and report back to the college community before the end of this academic year.  The ideas resulting from these conversation can form the basis for collaborative groups, working across departments, to develop plans and actions for Q2S in the coming years.  Finally, we want to capture a set of values and guiding principles we can return to as we make decisions moving forward.

The Open Conversations are scheduled as followed:

Faculty/Staff Q2S Open Conversations

There will be three Faculty/Staff Open Conversation.  Each conversation will have a focused set of prompts.  Please consider attending a session based on your interests.  These conversation prompts are meant to prime the conversation and are based on input and discussions happening in the CENG College Council and Curriculum and ABET Committees.  You are also welcomed to submit any ideas or comments to this form:  https://forms.office.com/r/jLMTQYEdNA

March 29th, 2-3pm

  • Focused Discussion Prompts:
    • Rethinking our degree pathways – barriers to graduation, transfer students, common student experiences, admission to the major, CSU/ABET curriculum requirements, co-curricular activities, etc.
    • Centering innovation and effective pedagogy in curricular design and implementation – multidisciplinary design experiences, just-in-time learning, self-directed learning, co-teaching, etc.

    • Centering student success and sense of belonging – student mental health and wellbeing, integrating JEDI topics, etc.
    • Rethinking service courses – where, and how, service courses are offered; connecting service to the discipline; pathways, threads, or minors for CENG and non-CENG students

    • Expanding the role of interdisciplinary opportunities – curricular threads (e.g., JEDI, ethics, systems thinking, service learning, etc.), co-curricular transcript or recognition, scholarship and undergraduate research, etc.
    • What does success look like in 2026 and 20309 (after the first semester cohort graduates)?
