Become a Shop Tech! Deadline Today.

Shop Tech with waterjet
Civil engineering student Katie Evans was one of the Cal Poly Shop Techs who spent part of the summer making personal protective equipment (PPE) for College of Engineering students and faculty. Here, Evans, a shop scheduling supervisor in the Mustang '60 Machine Shop, lines up a waterjet to cut plastic parts for protective shields.

Hello all! My name is Rose McCarver. I am a shop tech at the Cal Poly Machine shops … and you could be too!!

If you’re not familiar with this role, shop techs are responsible for maintaining the Cal Poly machine shops and supervising/teaching students who come to use them. This is a great opportunity to learn and to teach others about how to use of a variety of shop tools (and is also just a great on-campus job). The only current requirement for applications is that they have a yellow tag and at least 2 quarters of school remaining – the current techs will work with new hires to bring them up to speed on the use of shop equipment and train you.

The deadline for Spring hiring is 11:59pm on February 22nd and the application can be found here.

We hire at the end of each quarter, so even if you have plans for the upcoming quarter already, hope is not lost — you can apply for a position in the end of the quarter for summer hiring.
