Members of Cal Poly’s human-powered vehicle team have been preparing for a record-breaking attempt in Nevada this month. The team, comprised of roughly two dozen mechanical engineering students, hopes to break the current record of 61.3 mph when they compete at the Battle Mountain Human-Powered Speed Challenge, from Sept. 8 to 14. Cal Poly has had a human-powered vehicle team since 1978, but this is the first time they will attempt to break the record at the challenge. Here they are seen testing their creation at the Santa Margarita Ranch runway.
