Each week, the College of Engineering features an outstanding member of the engineering community to be part of its spotlight campaign. This week, we are highlighting Colin Carpenter, biomedical engineering administrative coordinator.

Hometown: Kailua, Hawaii

What brought you to Cal Poly College of Engineering?

My brother went to Cal Poly, so I thought it would be rad to be around him. The Dean’s Office was hiring, and I was lucky enough to start there before moving to the Biomedical Engineering Department.

What is your favorite part of your job?

The people I get to work with!

What is your favorite place in San Luis Obispo County and why?

Montaña de Oro — I got engaged there.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Surfing!

What is the most helpful advice you’ve received?

In work, it’d be “everything you’re doing has been done before,” in the sense that there’s a guide for it all. It is a lot easier to tackle problems when you have an unreal number of resources. In life, not anything specific, but just trying to be stoked that you get to wake up in the morning.

How does engineering apply to your daily life?

Problem-solving, I suppose. Just being around the level of intelligence here makes me feel like I’ve gotten smarter from exposure.

How do you encourage engineering students to make an impact on the community?

They really do absolutely mind-blowing work. I try to hype them up and help them see the genuine change that they are contributing to on a global scale.
