JEDI Update From Associate Dean Eric Mehiel

Hello, just a quick update on the work the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Action Planning Committee is engaged in.  Recall the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion (OUDI) asked all colleges and several other units on campus (e.g. University Housing, University Police Department, Advancement, etc.) to develop Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action Plans.  The development of these plans was a recommendation that came out of the CPx survey.  For more information on these efforts, check out the OUDI page.

In the College of Engineering, we gathered a group of dedicated individuals to take on developing the Engineering JEDI Action Plan.  So far this quarter we have held two dialogue/listening sessions with the college community, and two dialogue/listening sessions with student leaders.  These dialogues were focused on systemic and behavioral actions we can take to improve inclusivity and sense of belonging in the College, how to continually learn about the experience of the college community, and what metrics we can use to measure progress.

So far we have collected nearly 100 suggestions.  The committee will spend the next few weeks organizing and prioritizing the suggestions and developing a draft plan for release early Spring quarter.  We hope to get community feedback during the Spring quarter and produce a final plan toward the end of the quarter.

I want to thank the committee members and all of those that have participated in the dialogue sessions.  The committee members are: Helene Finger – WEP, Maria Zavala – ESS, Dianne DeTurris – AERO, Jane Lehr – CS (and other), Donna Aiken – CPE, Amin Malek – EE, Julia Ryan – IE.

We look forward to providing more updates.

Eric Mehiel, Ph.D.
