Each week, the College of Engineering features an outstanding member of the engineering community to be part of our spotlight campaign. This week, we are highlighting recent alumnus Gus Flusser.

What made you choose to study engineering at Cal Poly?

I loved working on Arduino and electrical engineering projects in middle school and high school. Cal Poly was the perfect school to continue exploring those interests for so many reasons.

What was your earliest engineering project?

LEGO robots with LEGO Mindstorms and LEGO Technic.

What are your hobbies?

Engineering and coding projects, working on my car and truck, watching all kinds of movies, reading (currently deep in Tolkien’s “The History of Middle-earth” series), line dancing and camping with friends.

What advice would you give to current engineering students?

Don’t be afraid to explore things that interest you. I switched my major halfway through college because I loved exploring both computer science and electrical engineering, and computer engineering led me to classes I enjoyed more, projects I liked working on and friendships I will cherish for the rest of my life.

How did the DXHub play an important role in your Cal Poly experience?

The DxHub extended Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing for me in so many directions. I gained experience speaking to customers about projects, developing systems and applications to solve their problems and working with them to fine-tune the output and interaction with the solutions. I also had the opportunity to travel and speak on panels about my work and the DxHub as a whole.
