Aerospace Engineering, BS

The aerospace engineering program prepares our students for careers designing aircraft and spacecraft through hands-on coursework, laboratory experiences and team-based design projects. Choose an aeronautics or astronautics concentration while building expertise in areas such as aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight mechanics and spacecraft systems. Research opportunities, specialized facilities and student competition teams provide additional experience that prepares our graduates for careers across the aerospace industry.

Biomedical Engineering, BS

Biomedical engineering combines engineering and biological sciences to develop technologies that improve human health. Our students build a foundation in engineering sciences, physiology and biological systems, with concentrations:

  • bioinstrumentation
  • cell therapy
  • mechanical design

Research, design projects and laboratory experiences prepare graduates for careers in medical devices, biotechnology, health care and related fields.

Civil Engineering, BS

Build the knowledge and technical skills to plan, design, construct and maintain the infrastructure that supports communities. The civil engineering program provides broad preparation across construction, geotechnical, structural, transportation and water resources engineering, with the flexibility to tailor upper-division coursework to your interests. Design projects, laboratory experiences and a two-course senior design project prepare graduates for careers in industry, consulting and public service.

Computer Engineering, BS

Computer engineering combines electrical engineering and computer science to design the hardware and systems that power modern computing. Our students build expertise through design-centered coursework and laboratory experiences, with concentrations in:

  • computer architecture
  • computer hardware engineering
  • computer systems
  • embedded systems
  • robotics and autonomous systems
  • security

Senior capstone projects and technical electives prepare graduates for careers developing computing, networking, robotics and embedded technologies.

Computer Science, BS

Computer science combines theory and practical application to solve complex computing challenges across industries. Our students develop expertise in programming, software engineering, operating systems and computer organization, with concentrations in:

  • artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • data engineering
  • game development
  • graphics
  • privacy and security.

Project-based coursework, specialized laboratories and a senior project prepare graduates for careers in software development, computing and emerging technologies.

Electrical Engineering, BS

Electrical engineering explores the technologies that power modern electronics, communications and energy systems. Our students build a strong foundation in circuits, electronics, computing and system design, with concentrations in:

Design-centered laboratories, technical electives, research opportunities and a senior design project prepare graduates for careers across industries ranging from renewable energy and robotics to communications and semiconductor technologies.

Environmental Engineering, BS

Environmental engineering focuses on protecting public health and natural resources through sustainable engineering solutions. Our students build expertise in air and water pollution control, environmental systems, water resources, hazardous and solid waste management, energy and environmental chemistry. Project-based coursework, modern laboratories and a two-course senior design projects prepare graduates for careers in consulting, industry and public agencies addressing complex environmental challenges.

Facilities Engineering Technology (Cal Poly Maritime Academy), BS

Facilities engineering technology prepares graduates to operate, maintain and improve the complex mechanical and electrical systems that power commercial buildings, manufacturing facilities and industrial plants. Our students build expertise through applied coursework and three hands-on training experiences, including a sea training period aboard Training Ship Golden Bear and two industry cooperative education placements that prepare them for careers in facilities and industrial operations.

General Engineering, BS

Create an engineering degree tailored to your interests and career goals through an individualized course of study. The general engineering program combines a strong foundation in engineering, mathematics and science with the flexibility to explore interdisciplinary fields and emerging technologies. Working closely with faculty advisors, students customize advanced coursework to prepare for careers in engineering, project management, entrepreneurship, graduate study and other technical professions.

Industrial Engineering, BS

Industrial engineering focuses on improving the performance of organizations by optimizing processes, systems and decision-making. The curriculum emphasizes data analytics, quality improvement and the integration of people, materials, information, equipment and energy to solve complex operational challenges. Design-focused coursework and a senior capstone prepare graduates for careers in manufacturing, health care, consulting, supply chain, technology, finance and many other industries.

Manufacturing Engineering, BS

Manufacturing engineering transforms product designs into efficient, scalable production systems. Explore automation, robotics, computer-aided manufacturing, production tooling, quality assurance and design for manufacturability while learning how to optimize modern manufacturing processes. From consumer products to aerospace components, graduates are equipped to improve how products are made across advanced manufacturing and industrial environments.

Marine Engineering Technology (Cal Poly Maritime Academy), BS

Operate and maintain the mechanical and electrical systems that power commercial and military vessels. The marine engineering technology program combines engineering fundamentals with extensive sea training in steam, motor and gas turbine propulsion systems, including two training periods aboard Training Ship Golden Bear. Graduates are prepared for careers at sea and to pursue U.S. Coast Guard licensure as Third Assistant Engineer, Steam and Motor Vessels, Unlimited Horsepower.

Materials Engineering, BS

Materials engineering focuses on designing and optimizing the materials that enable modern technologies. Study the relationships between structure, properties and performance while working with metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors and composites used in industries ranging from aerospace to biomedical engineering. Graduates apply their expertise across research, product development, manufacturing and emerging technologies where material performance drives innovation.

Mechanical Engineering, BS

Mechanical engineering applies the principles of mechanics, fluids and thermal sciences to design, manufacture and improve everything from consumer products to energy systems and industrial equipment. Customize your education with concentrations in:

Mechanical Engineering (Cal Poly Maritime Academy), BS

Combine rigorous engineering coursework with maritime experience to develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to design, analyze and operate complex mechanical systems. Choose between the general curriculum or the U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer License concentration, which includes extensive sea training aboard Training Ship Golden Bear. Graduates pursue careers in the maritime industry, energy sector and traditional mechanical engineering fields both ashore and at sea.

Software Engineering, BS

Software engineering focuses on designing, building and maintaining reliable software systems that meet real-world needs. The curriculum emphasizes collaborative software development, software architecture, quality assurance, testing, configuration management and the engineering practices used throughout the software development lifecycle. A yearlong team capstone provides experience developing large-scale software systems for careers in software engineering, development, product management and related technology fields.
