Professor Kristen O’Halloran Cardinal (BMED) and her Cal Poly student research team recently published first-of-its-kind work in the Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery. The publication demonstrated how Cardinal and her team were able to use standard silicone neurovascular models to create living in vitro blood vessels, which were then used to evaluate devices meant to treat aneurysms. The studies included an industry collaborator from Stryker Neurovascular, who provided the silicone tubes and the devices for testing. This work, and the new type of in vitro vessels, could help neurovascular device companies develop and test new therapies more efficiently before going into animal or human studies.
