Engineering, by Design
Student Recognition Program
At the College of Engineering, we want to make sure we are helping you showcase your accomplishments both inside and outside of the classroom. Because of that, we’re excited to introduce Engineering, by Design, a new CENG recognition program designed to help you get credit for all the good things you do on campus and in the community.
How it Works
With each recognition compiled onto your own collage-style page called a Portrait, similar to other social platforms like LinkedIn, you can showcase peer- and faculty-verified feedback to future employers, including how well you work with others, how considerate you are with your work and how you succeed as a leader or a follower.
You can nominate yourself and others to receive recognition from the Dean’s office for achievements associated with the six Engineering, by Design badges. It is a great opportunity for you to receive recognition for all the good work you do.
This recognition program is unique because it allows you to be seen in a positive way that is not curated by only you. We all need to promote ourselves, but there is also a need for peer promotion. Rather than rely on a single piece of paper or highly curated LinkedIn profile to communicate everything about yourself to future employers, you can now tap into something new and even more valuable: peer- and faculty-verified recognition assembled on your Preciate Portrait.
Preciate Badges
We have designed six custom badges through Preciate, a peer appreciation platform where anyone can give and receive recognition. The badges correspond to the Engineering, by Design value areas including work experience, leadership, civic engagement, inclusion, professional skills, and cultural context. Below are just a few examples of common activities perfect for a nomination, but various activities worthy of a nomination are limitless!
Civic Engagement
Cal Poly engineers build capacity in their communities through civil discourse and supporting the institutions necessary for a free and fair democracy. Earn Civic Engagement badges by:
- Completing EPIC Outreach Training
- Completing a service-learning project
- Working as an EPIC Camp Councilor
- Serving as an EPIC Outreach Trainer
- Volunteering 40/80/150 hours for social service agency or outreach
Cultural Context
Engineering solutions must meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors. Earn Cultural Context badges by:
- Attending Cross Cultural Centers workshops
- Practicing cultural competency
- Completing a foreign language course
- Participating in international service or mission experience
- Being a current international student enrolled at Cal Poly
- Participating in an Alternative Break program
- Participating in a study abroad program
- Participating in a Cultural Club
Inclusion
Teams thrive when members create a collaborative and inclusive environment together. Earn Inclusion badges by:

Leadership

- Participating in a WOW leadership position
- Completing the Emerging Leadership Series
- Serving in a leadership role in a club or organization

Professional Skills
Cal Poly engineers understand the value of communication, networking, and ethical and professional responsibility. Earn Professional Skills badges by:
- Completing a StrengthsQuest assessment
- Active membership in a club for six quarters
- Participating in an on-campus interview
- Completing a LinkedIn profile
- Becoming a member of Order of the Engineer
- Completing Safety Training
- Completing a class/club project portfolio
- Meaningful participation in a CENG club competition
- Becoming a mentor
- Completing a Summer Undergraduate Research Project
- Helping organize a conference/workshop

Work Experience
Part of Learn-by-Doing means gaining practical experience and putting your skills to work while a Cal Poly student. Earn Work Experience badges by:
- Engaging in meaningful part-time or full-time work within College of Engineering (shop tech, safety officer, etc.)
- Completing one or more internships totaling 350-hours
- Completing an Earn by Doing position
- Participating in the CIE HotHouse Accelerator Program or start a business
- Receiving an offer for full time employment offer before graduation
