Kiro Now Available for Cal Poly Faculty

We're thrilled to share that the Kiro free Student Tier is now officially live for faculty at Cal Poly!   

What is Kiro? Kiro is an AI-powered coding environment that helps developers go from prototype to production with spec-driven development. Faculty and students can describe an app in plain English, and Kiro generates the code, sets up architecture, and handles the implementation — all the tedious work that normally bogs down learning. 

What does the Student Tier include (that’s also available for faculty)?

  • 1,000 credits per month — free for 12 months 
  • No AWS account required — faculty can sign in with Gmail, GitHub, or AWS Builder ID 
  • Supports all major programming languages including Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, and more 
  • Access to Kiro's full agentic IDE, including specs, hooks, and agentic chat 

How do Faculty sign up?

  1. Visit the student landing page: kiro.dev/students
  2. Click "Sign up and verify" and log in or create an account 
  3. Click "I'm an educator" in Account Settings 
  4. Complete verification through SheerID (Kiro's verification partner). Note: To complete verification, you may be asked to submit additional documentation such as a School ID Card with expiration date, class schedule, or tuition receipt
  5. Once confirmed, your tier name will show up as "Kiro Students" on your account usage page. All students and educators from eligible universities are granted access to the Kiro Student tier.

Learn by Playing 🎮 Once signed up you can dive in with Kiro's interactive tutorial:  In this guide, users will learn how to use Kiro by completing tasks in the codebase for a sample video game called Spirit of Kiro.  Get started here  This is also a great resource to share with students at the start of a course or as a self-paced onboarding activity.  

Join the KiroHacks Hackathon hosted by Cal Poly's CS+AI Club: Join us at the MAC on May 2nd for a full-day, in-person hackathon where students will ideate, build, and showcase a project from scratch alongside fellow Mustangs using the Kiro IDE. Faculty are welcome to attend or serve as judges.
