This course provides a comprehensive overview of the principles, ethics, strategies and management practices that define effective and responsible fundraising with a focus on higher education and specifically, the advancement operation at Cal Poly. Using Achieving Excellence in Fundraising as the core text and a variety of guest speakers in the greater field of philanthropy, students will explore donor behavior, institutional readiness, fundraising vehicles, stewardship, governance and the evolving role of philanthropy in society. Emphasis will be on practical application with a dual focus on how to apply lessons learned from the course to the broader field of sales and business, and fundraising activities and strategies for student clubs an organizations at Cal Poly.
