Join Cal Poly Hyperloop and Tunneling

We’re looking for passionate engineers to join the Cal Poly Hyperloop and Tunneling club!

This is a student-led club that consists of a broad range of engineering, computer science and other STEM majors who are driven to research and develop a tunnel boring machine. Our team focuses on teaching and learning from others and helping all members get experience through research, prototyping, testing and manufacturing.

Our goal is to compete in the Not-A-Boring Competition sponsored by The Boring Company and Elon Musk. Teams from around the world design small-scale tunnel boring machines to bore tunnels in Pflugerville, Texas, the location of the Boring Company headquarters. We believe this competition is the next logical extension of the Hyperloop ethos, in which teams are tasked with solving unique and exciting problems through competition. This undertaking is an exciting design shift, from linear induction motors and magnetic levitation to drill face and tunnel construction.

The club is divided into seven subteams, each with distinct goals towards the competition:

System Management: The System Management team is focused on ensuring the successful implementation of the individual design systems in the boring machine project.

Control Systems: The Controls team is focused on using microcontrollers, communication protocols and controls system testing to control the boring machine.

Power Systems: The Power Systems team is focused on sensor calibration, wire management and power management.

Cooling and Mucking: The Cooling and Mucking team is focused on heat management of the various mechanical and electrical systems and transporting the excavated dirt from the tunnel to an external location.

Cutterhead: The Cutterhead team is focused on the drilling mechanism and tunneling shield of the boring machine.

Chassis and Shield: The Chassis and Shield team is focused on the shell and locomotion of the boring machine and the support system for the excavated tunnel.

Business: The Business team is focused on outreach and sponsorship acquisition for the club.

We’re looking for participants for all aspects of the club, and no experience is necessary to join. General meetings are held weekly at Engineering IV (building 192) in room 132 starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

Interested engineers can join the club’s Slack here and can find more information about the club at the club website www.calpolyhyperloop.com. They can also reach out directly to the club at calpolyhyperloop@gmail.com
