Friday: New Student Day
-
What is the purpose of Open House Friday activities?
This day is devoted to students who have been conditionally admitted to Cal Poly. Attendance is by invitation only, and events and activities are reserved for those students and their families. In addition to participating in university-wide events, students are also invited to attend college and department based functions to help them become familiar with the campus and their area of academic interest.
-
What should I wear?
You can expect to do plenty of walking throughout the day. Comfortable clothing and shoes are essential. In addition, the month of April in the San Luis Obispo area can have temperatures from very warm to very cool. Dressing in removable "layers", including a light jacket or sweatshirt, is recommended.
-
Where should I go when I arrive to campus Friday?
We recommend that guests go to the greeting area, located on Mott Lawn (adjacent to Mott Gym, Bldg. 42), where you will receive an Open House Program/Welcome packet.
-
What should I bring?
A large, empty tote bag or backpack, camera, bottled water, a small note pad or mini pad to record notes, sunglasses and a hat.
-
Will I be able to speak to professors on Friday?
Each department is planning a welcome program on Friday. Please refer to the Friday Schedule for details.
-
Am I required to RSVP?
Please do RSVP! Departments and programs use the attendee numbers to help plan for number of lunches or refreshments available for guests. RSVPing is highly recommended to ensure a successful visit to Cal Poly, and to ensure that all guests can be accommodated.
-
I'm having trouble RSVPing. What do I do?
To RSVP to Open House, please use the link provided in the Open House Information email sent to you. That email will have specifics on who to contact in case you need to change your Open House registration.
If you are still unable to RSVP after trying the approach above, fill out our contact form.
-
Can I attend Saturday's activities, too?

I can't come during Open House. Can I visit the College of Engineering another time?
Yes! The College of Engineering has College overview tours and department tours various days during the week. For a complete schedule, visit our tour information site.
-
How do I make arrangements for accommodations?
Hotel/motel accommodations fill up quickly in San Luis Obispo, so we recommend making reservations as early as possible. Some visitors have had to secure lodging in adjoining cities such as Pismo Beach, Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, and Paso Robles. For up-to-the minute information on accommodations, contact the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce at (805) 781-2777, or browse lodging information at visitslo.com.

I don't see my question answered here. What do I do?

-
Will information about student housing be provided during Open House?
General Information about on and off-campus housing can be found at http://housing.calpoly.edu/. Students and parents can also call the main University Housing line at 805/756-1226. Housing Tours will be offered on April 18 and 19 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. To participate in a tour, Open House visitors should present themselves to the front desk of any on-campus hall they are interested in touring. The tours are led by the hall residents. Housing Information sessions will take place at the tent located opposite from the Admin. Building on Perimeter Road and in front of Santa Lucia Hall. Question and answer periods will follow. Off-campus housing information will be available in a separate tent.

If I could only come for one day during Open House, which would be the recommended day?
Friday is Admitted Students Day, reserved for conditionally admitted students and their families, by invitation only. The day's events are designed to provide those students the opportunity to be introduced to the faculty in their area of academic interest, ask more specific questions, tour the departments and labs, and interact with current students about their Cal Poly experience.
