	June 30, 2009 Contact: Amy Hewes Cal Poly Engineering 805-756-6402 ahewes@calpoly.edu Recent BMED Grad Wins One Last Time Emily Hakun graduated from Cal Poly in 2008 with both a bachelor's and master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, but not before she had the opportunity to win one more award. Hakun won first place in the Collegiate Technical Poster Competition at the SWE national conference in Baltimore a year ago. Hakun's poster was about her thesis, which she describes as "a sterile, climate-controlled volume that cells can be printed into in tissue engineering procedures." The poster discussed current tissue engineering techniques, cell printing, the design process, and testing procedures, results, analysis and conclusion. In 2007, Hakun was awarded Outstanding Woman in Engineering and Technology for the Cal Poly SWE chapter. Also that year, she co-directed the project that won first place at the national Boeing Team Tech Competition. The Cal Poly SWE team worked with Walt Disney Imagineers to design roller coaster weld point inspection devices. Hakun describes leading her 24-member team to a first place win at the Team Tech competition as one of her proudest accomplishments. Hakun currently works as a Quality Assurance Engineer for Apollo Endosurgery, a world leader in the development of minimally invasive medical procedures.	Frank E. I believe we need to give something back to the school that helps us. I hope my gift might set an example for others to give something back to the institution that helped them become successful.
