Cal Poly industrial and manufacturing professor Dr. Jianbiao Pan came home from an international conference in Bannockburn, IL with a first place ribbon and cash prize of $5,000.

Cal Poly Engineering Professor Wins International Poster Competition

Universities from around the world competed at the IPC APEX EPO® in March. IPC is a 2,700-member global trade association representing all facets of the $1.7 trillion global electronics industry.

Pan's poster on "The Calculation of Liquidus Temperature for Various BGA/CSP Assemblies" presents detailed algorithm for calculating solder alloy composition for various lead-free applications. Using the algorithm, Pan has developed and posted an online calculator for use by the industry (see http://www.calpoly.edu/~pan/LTCalculator.html.)

"This was our first year sponsoring a worldwide academic poster competition and we were extremely pleased with the submissions," said Tony Hilvers, IPC vice president of industry programs. "The posters reflect the best of electronic interconnection research being conducted at the academic level, and we're delighted to be able to bring the students and academic advisors together with industry to foster greater cooperation."

Poster finalists came from prestigious engineering universities worldwide, including Purdue, Osaka University, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, Warsaw University of Technology, UC Irvine, and others.

“My Cal Poly education was a major factor in my career movement.

I made a fairly substantial contribution to Cal Poly for one good reason. I believe we need to give something back to the school that helps us. I hope my gift might set an example for others to give something back to the institution that helped them become successful.
