Cal Poly to Celebrate National Engineers Week Feb. 17 – 23

Cal Poly engineering students will present a variety of educational and entertaining events for students and the local community to enjoy during National Engineers Week, Feb. 17 - 23.

Several of the events scheduled throughout the week stress the importance of community involvement and environmental responsibility. Students have organized a Sustainability Day Showcase for Wednesday, Feb. 20 and campus groups will host an Engineering Club Fair at Farmer's Market in downtown San Luis Obispo on Thursday, Feb. 21.

"We hope that through these activities, we can cultivate a greater understanding of the positive impacts engineers have on the world," said Matt Teresi, National Engineers Week chair. "We want these events to convey the idea that engineers can make a world of difference to people of all ages and disciplines."

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Engineers Week is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers and leaders in government and business.

Monday, Feb. 18 kicks off the week's festivities with a Lockheed Martin Wii Game Tournament, a performance from Smile ‘n Nod Improv Comedy, and a keynote speech delivered by Northrop Grumman executive Eric Pearson.

Students will host a blood drive on Tuesday, Feb. 19 and Northrop Grumman will bring its Virtual Jetworks Flight Simulator to campus for an industry showcase. Students can enjoy a free clam chowder lunch and complimentary door prizes.

Wednesday's Sustainability Day Showcase marks a first for National Engineers Week. Students will display several environmentally friendly projects and REC Solar, a local alternative energy solution corporation, will sponsor a sustainability panel discussion and a free zero-waste lunch.

In addition to the Engineering Club Fair at Farmer's Market, many students will visit local elementary and high school classes on Thursday, Feb. 21 to teach students about the field of engineering and share their personal experiences. Tom Bishop, a Cal Poly alumnus and vice president of Strategic Development at URS Corp, will also speak to students on campus.

Student organizers have planned many other events throughout the week, both on and off campus. For a full list of dates, times and locations, please see below or visit the website: http://ceng.calpoly.edu/engineers-week/2008/

“We took 18 club members to the Society of Black Engineers & Scientists convention in Pittsburgh, which was very inspiring.

It was the "Learn by Doing" mantra that first attracted me to Cal Poly. The Multicultural Engineering Program scholarship allowed me to focus on my studies. It also allowed me the time to be president of the Society of Black Engineers & Scientists. The support of companies that fund scholarships is vital and is, of course, very much appreciated.
