Bonderson Fellowship

Joint M.S.-Ph.D. Study in Biomedical Engineering

Application Deadline: Monday, February 2, 2009

The Bonderson Fellowship is a five-year fellowship package that supports study for a master's degree at Cal Poly followed by a Ph.D. program at UC Santa Barbara.

What does the Bonderson Fellowship provide?

  • A stipend for living expenses, tuition, fees, books, of $26,000 annually for years 1 and 2, increasing to $30,000 annually by year 5.
  • Supplemental funding for research equipment, supplies, and travel.
  • A collaborative Cal Poly/UCSB faculty committee will advise the fellowship recipient on academic and research activities.

Eligibility

The recipient must enter either a post-baccalaureate Biomedical Engineering M.S. program or the equivalent blended 4+1 program at Cal Poly during the 2008 calendar year. Each applicant will be considered simultaneously for conditional acceptance to the BMSE or related Ph.D. program at UCSB.

Selection criteria

  1. Undergraduate academic record,
  2. Up to three letters of recommendation,
  3. Graduate Record Exam scores,
  4. Statement of purpose and interest in pursuing the joint M.S./Ph.D. program,
  5. Demonstrated understanding of the degree programs involved.

Application Materials

Your application should include a brief cover letter confirming your interest in pursuing graduate work in Biomedical Engineering at both Cal Poly and UCSB, and providing contact information. Also include the following attachments:

  1. Your complete undergraduate transcript(s). (Informal downloaded transcripts and photocopies are acceptable.)
  2. Letters of recommendation from up to three persons who can attest to your academic performance and potential for advanced research (in sealed envelopes).
  3. A statement of purpose clearly describing your motivation for seeking an advanced degree in Biomedical Engineering, and describing any previous achievements and experiences that may relate to the likelihood of your successfully completing such a program.
  4. A statement expressing your understanding of and interest in the research activities now underway in your chosen area, especially at UCSB. This statement should be as specific as possible, citing particular projects and publications, and identifying one or more faculty members, both at UCSB and at Cal Poly, whose interests seem most closely aligned with your own, and whom you might seek to have as your advisor.
  5. A copy of your GRE scores, if available. Official results must also be provided directly to UCSB from the Educational Testing Service. GRE scores can arrive up to a month after the Jan. 31 application deadline.

Note that we expect finalists to be invited to participate in an orientation for newly admitted engineering graduate students at UCSB, in early March.

Deadline

End of the business day, Thursday, January 31, 2008.
